MUBA. - An illegal oil refinery exploded and caught fire in Keban Satu Village, Sanga Desa District, Sunday evening (August 2, 2026). The incident seemed odd because it occurred just days after the Sanga Desa Police raided several illegal oil refineries on Tuesday (July 28, 2026).
Residents stated that the oil refinery that caught fire belonged to MR, a resident of Lubuk Bon Hamlet, Keban 2 Village, Keban Satu Village, Sanga Desa District. The incident occurred around 8:00 PM WIB, shortly after the Isa call to prayer.
"The food belonged to MR, a resident of Lubuk Bon Hamlet, Keban 2 Village, and we don't know the cause," said ID in his statement, Monday (3/8/2026).
According to him, residents were startled by the thunderous sound of an explosion, followed by flames shooting into the air, lighting up the dark sky. Shortly after, the fire was finally contained, having completely destroyed the site and the pile of unprocessed crude oil.
When contacted by the Sanga Desa Police regarding the incident, they have not yet provided a statement. A text message sent to the Head of Criminal Investigation Unit, First Inspector Candra Irawan, went unanswered. Meanwhile, the Muba Police Chief, AKBP Ruri Prastowo, only expressed gratitude for the information and has not yet provided any information regarding the legal process surrounding the incident.
"Thank you for the information," said the Police Chief briefly.
This incident seems ironic amidst the Musi Banyuasin Police's firm commitment to cracking down on illegal oil refining operations by the Sanga Desa Police. A few days earlier, they had successfully cracked down on three illegal refineries in Hamlet VII, Keban I Village, Sanga Desa District, Musi Banyuasin Regency, on Tuesday morning (July 28, 2026).
This operation was carried out on the direct orders of the Muba Police Chief, AKBP Ruri Prastowo, and was immediately followed up. Therefore, the Sanga Desa Police Chief, IPTU Harun Suardi S., SE, M.Pd, led it directly and was accompanied by the Head of Criminal Investigation Unit, IPDA Candra Irawan, SH, MH, C.MSP., along with Sanga Desa Police personnel.
At around 07.20 WIB, while carrying out a patrol to eradicate illegal refineries, officers discovered three locations that were still actively carrying out illegal crude oil refining activities.
At the first location, officers visited a refinery suspected to belong to AZ, who is currently on the wanted list. There, police apprehended four individuals who were cooking oil using a single furnace with a capacity of approximately 140 drums.
Then, at the second location which is suspected to belong to MZ (DPO), officers also arrested two perpetrators who were carrying out refining activities using a furnace with a capacity of around 130 drums.
Then, at the third location, which is suspected to belong to LS (DPO), two other people were arrested while cooking illegal crude oil using a stove with a capacity of around 120 drums.
In total, eight people were arrested from the three locations. All perpetrators, along with evidence, were then taken to the Sanga Desa Police Station for further questioning and legal proceedings.
Apart from securing the perpetrators, officers also confiscated various refining equipment and dozens of tedmons containing processed oil.
From the location belonging to AZ (DPO), the police confiscated one cooking stove, two blowers, two suction machines, two shovels, two iron sticks, one hose, and 33 tedmons containing processed oil, consisting of 15,000 liters of yellow oil, 14,000 liters of black oil, and 4,000 liters of white oil.
From the location belonging to MZ (DPO), the evidence that was secured was one cooking stove, two suction machines, one set of blowers, one hose, one jerrycan containing refined oil, as well as 25 tedmons containing processed oil, each containing 14,000 liters of white oil and 11,000 liters of yellow oil.
Meanwhile, from the location belonging to LS (DPO), the police secured one cooking stove, one suction machine, one blower, one hose, one jerrycan containing refined oil, and three tedmons containing around 3,000 liters of yellow processed oil.
"So, this is a form of firm commitment from the Muba Police Chief, AKBP Ruri Prastowo, the South Sumatra Regional Police, and all stakeholders in South Sumatra Province as an appropriate law enforcement measure. This is also part of the government's strategy in realizing national energy security. The three owners of the oil refinery were known not to be at the time of the raid and have now been designated as DPOs," said the Muba Police Chief, AKBP Ruri Prastowo, through the Head of the Muba Police Criminal Investigation Unit, AKP M. Wahyudi, when met.
He continued, stating that the Musi Banyuasin Police reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating the misuse of illegal fuel and supporting the management of energy resources through regulatory channels. These efforts are expected to maintain national energy security and benefit the community and the regional economy. (red.)
